Begin with a need
Goals are targets we set in response to an unmet need or a wish to develop. A goal becomes realistic when we consider the resources available to achieve it. Setting ambitious targets without that assessment may lead to frustration and discouragement.
Three steps
First, identify the need. A wish for greater financial security might lead you to consider a new role, a project or a closer look at your abilities. Second, identify the resources required and compare them with what is genuinely available. Third, create a plan with specific steps and a time frame, so that progress can be followed.
Choosing a priority
Ask what you could do differently, what is keeping you in place and what you need now. Notice the emotions associated with work, relationships, money and family. A strong sense of meaning or interest may help you recognise a priority, while remembering that another person’s solution may not suit you.
Reviewing progress
The article gives saving a regular monthly amount as an example of a concrete, measurable step. Review both progress and how the goal feels. If it no longer meets your needs, reconsider it thoughtfully, while distinguishing a genuine change in priorities from avoidance. Support can help you identify a starting point and keep working towards a better quality of life.
